How to protect your premises

Your business premises are the hub of everything you do. It likely houses everything important to you and your company.

Thieves pray on such properties because of these assets – computers, important documents and sometimes even money.

In this blog I’m going to give you some advice on how to better protect your business property and everything that it houses.

Assess potential risks

Firstly walk around the property and look for any potential flaws in your current security. When you’re doing this think from the perspective of a thief, it should help give you a better idea of entry points that they can utilise.

You should also take note of places that are in need of extra security like safes, stock storage etc. List everything that you feel you’re going to need to implement.

Take necessary security measures

Outfit each entrance point with several strong locks and if need be replace doors and windows. If the entry point is large consider shutters and grilles.

Install alarm systems throughout your premises and regularly check them. It’s not uncommon for such systems to become faulty over time. You should also install lighting and CCTV cameras throughout the area. This will help keep would be thieves at bay and if they do find a way in, catch them in the future.

If you feel that there are any areas on your premises that could be accessed through climbing then purchase things like graffiti paint to deter any unwanted visitors.

Delegate responsibility

It’s all very well and good implementing these security measures but if you and your staff aren’t taking responsibility to ensure that they’re in working order it won’t be long until you fall victim to a crime.

You should delegate different staff members to hold certain responsibilities. Who will look after the keys to the premises? Who will monitor your CCTV? Who is the last to leave?

Security isn’t all about the technology you’re using, but the people you employ too. Make sure that they aren’t neglecting their responsibilities.
